The modern Trans America Race began in 1992. Organized by Jesse Dale Riley of Key West, Florida, and Michael Kenney of Eugene, Oregon, it was designed to recreate the challenge faced by the original Bunion Derby racers of 1928 and 1929. It is held annually.
